I love Seadoo’s and the XP has always fascinated me the most, after getting my hands on my dream Seadoo XPDI. I wanted to go back to where it all started and get my hands on a, ‘First generation Seadoo XP, 580cc 1991 TWIN CARB’!...
In Episode 2 I go over everything we will be restoring in this Seadoo XP 1991, 580cc, Twin Carb series. There is a tone of cosmetic bits that need restoring to OEM, a number of parts that need sourced (if I can find them) including an original OEM cover...plus I will be recreating OEM decals.
Episode 3 focuses on the removal of the damaged and incorrect decals on this 1991 Seadoo XP, in readiness for recreating and replacing the OEM decals. In this episode I talk through all the things to be aware of when removing decals, plus how to make OEM decals.
In episode 4 it was time to give this 1991 Seadoo XP a deep clean and also I gave it its first start up on the flush...Watch along as I talk through all of the key details to maintaining your Classic Jetski. This first deep clean was all about getting into all those tight/hard to reach spots, using detailing brushes and generally cleaning the jetski from top to bottom.
Cleaning mouldy OEM original Seadoo XP 1991 Nylon foot mats and removing water stains. The foot mats are original and I wanted to save them as they have Seadoo embossed in the padding itself...A lot of owners from this time period (90’s), stripped the OEM mats and replaced with aftermarket options, so it’s super rare now in 2025 to find an original example with the OEM foot mats still present. In this episode I tackle cleaning the foot mats, removing the mould and bringing these OEM foot mats back to their formal glory. Plus I get to work on removing the stubborn water stains from water being left in the footwells.
In this episode I’m tackling sticking down the bumpy foot matting. This is a common issue on the old 2 stroke Seadoos, where the rubber foot mat material ends up deforming from standing water sat in the foot wells. After removing all of the mould in the last episode 5, my attention turned to using grab adhesive to hold down the foot mats...however it was rather tricky to get them to stay stuck down.... 6 attempts later and I did it...if you want to save OEM foot mats, this really is the video for you.
So naturally once I got the XPDI my intrigue for the XP’s grew, I wanted to learn more and get closer to understanding the innovation and history of the XP's. So I set out to find a first gen XP to see how far the XP's had come, in their 16 year run. Buying this 91 XP was the true spark for realising I had a real love affair with not just the XPDI, but all the classics.
The 1991 XP was the first ever year we saw the XP, it marks the start of the XP model arc! I wanted the first ever XP 1991 and the final 4th Gen XPDI 2003.
Just look at it! The neon green and purple, its pure 90s for me, it symbolises everything aesthetically, that I love about that retro era.
The Gen 1 XP was the natural successor and built on top of the SP hull to offer the next gen, its the first time we saw the tiering between SP & XP.
When my Dad was 27 he had a SP and its all he could afford at the time, he told me how the 1991-1992 XP was his dream upgrade at the time!
